Good news at the end of the year. Some 6.3 million French people will benefit from a refund from the tax authorities due to an overpayment on the payment of the housing tax for 2019. The amount concerned reached 1.14 billion euros in total, announces the Ministry of Action and Public Accounts (PDF), Tuesday October 8. The households concerned have paid their tax monthly but they have not not sufficiently modulated downwards ” their payments.

The housing tax will be completely abolished in 2020 for 80% of French people. But as explained Le Figaro, reductions have already been put in place: 30% in 2018 and 65% this year. The tax authorities are based on the amount of the housing tax for the year to establish the monthly payments, but the households affected by a total abolition in 2020 also had to apply the new rate of relief.

These automatic refunds are easily identifiable on the bank statements of the persons concerned. The line will correspond to the name of the issuer, such as “DDFIP de la Haute-Vienne” or “DRFIP Grand Est et Dpt Bas-Rhin”. To avoid a new overpayment next year, the ministry specifies that monthly taxpayers eligible for the 2020 reform can modify their monthly levy from October 16 on their online space or by phone.
