In 2020, the housing tax will be abolished for 80% of the poorest households. The savings will not be the same for everyone. According to journalist Dorothée Lachaud, it all depends on where she lives. “There are places where the housing tax is particularly high: there is Brittany, the Pays de la Loire, the North or the Ardennes. All these areas are the ones that will gain the most in purchasing power once this tax is removed, because they are the ones who pay the most today. Then there are departments that have many low-income households. This is the case, for example, in central France, where the number of exempt households will be the largest. As for Corsica and the Mediterranean rim, they combine the two factors: a high housing tax and a large number of exempt households.“.

The better-off will wait until 2023

Conversely, in some cities of Yvelines, the abolition of the housing tax will not cause a big change for taxpayers, because this tax is already low. In Savoie, the proximity to Switzerland means that taxpayers are more affluent there. The latter will have to wait until 2023 to see their housing tax abolished.
