Innovation: will electricity be the future of aviation?

Some manufacturers are betting: the aircraft of the future will be electric. In Slovenia, this type of device already exists, but it cannot yet go around the world for lack of sufficient autonomy.

Innovation: will electricity be the future of aviation?

In the world of the future, 180-seat planes will run on electricity and zero-emission freighters will transport goods to the heart of cities. This world, where electricity replaces kerosene in airplanes, seems far away, almost unattainable, but according to some manufacturers, it will be ours in ten years. One of them is in a village in Slovenia.

A loading time proportional to the flight time

The Pipistrel company has already created a 100% electric aircraft. With a capacity of two seats, the device is the very first to have been certified by European authorities. “It’s really quiet, there’s not a lot of noise, and it’s really stable. And since it only works on electricity, no pollution!“, Enthuses his pilot. After an hour, however, you have to land to plug in the small plane, and charging takes as long as the flight time. A low range therefore, but thanks to its price similar to a conventional aircraft, commercial success is at the rendezvous: 40 planes were produced in 2019, and nearly double the following year.
