The generosity of grandparents, new pillars of the family

Grandparents are increasingly essential for the well-being of their families and grandchildren. Jihane Benzina talks about the importance of grandparents in everyday life.

In the face of the crisis, grandparents now act as essential pillars within families. And the main targets of their attentions are their grandchildren. “Grandparents are generous. Each year, they donate 1.4 billion euros directly to their grandchildren ”, explains Jihane Benzina, on the France 2 plateau. Aid can take several forms: occasional help, deposits for housing, vacations, childcare… The journalist recalls a figure: “23 million hours per week: this is the time that all grandparents in France spend looking after their grandchildren. (…) It is as much as the hours provided by the childminders, and it is as much, obviously, that the parents will not have to pay ”.

Possible tax exemptions

Grandparents can benefit from tax exemptions. “If they pay regular help, they can deduct up to 5,698 euros per small child from their taxes. Likewise, if they house their grandchildren permanently (…), it is considered as alimony: 3,386 euros per small child ”, poursuit Jihane Benzina.
