In La Manche, a retiree refuses to leave her home on the coast. However, the sea greatly threatens the home.
At 85, Bernadette Lièvre refuses to leave her house in Les Pieux (Manche). She settled there, very close to the coast, 40 years ago. Over the years, she has seen the sea approaching. Now, at high tide, the water is only a few meters from his house.
The situation has become critical. “It will fall, since nobody does anything”, she blurted out to the France 3 camera. The problem is that her house is located in an area protected by coastal law: no work can be done to prevent erosion.
“I thought I would end my life here“
The mayor advised him to leave on days when the tidal coefficients are greater than 100. “She wants to stay at home, which I understand perfectly. If there is a big storm (…), we will have to evacuate Madam to keep her safe ”, confides André Peyronnel, deputy mayor.
Bernadette had to rent a studio all year round to take refuge there on high tide days. But she is not abandoning her home. “I thought I would end my life here. (sigh) Here, I can welcome my grandchildren… ”, she said, moved.
